I'm a security engineer. For years, part of my job has been auditing companies' security — testing their defenses and finding the weak points before criminals do.
Audit after audit, the same pattern appeared. The firewalls were fine. The software was patched. But employees were reusing one password everywhere, clicking phishing links, and skipping two-factor authentication. The technology held up — the people were the way in.
And these were people with an IT department, security training, and someone to call when things went wrong. One day it hit me: if they struggle with the basics, what about everyone else? Our parents. Retirees. People with no IT department and no one to ask.
I went looking for something I could recommend to a non-technical person. Everything I found was either written for IT professionals or too shallow to actually protect anyone.
